Life Legacy

Geraldine Kay Ames, 71, of Virgil, died Wednesday, May 4 at Fire Steel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7th at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Visitation will be two hours before the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Tulare Cemetery.

Geraldine Kay Blake was born December 9, 1939 to Raphael and Mable (Hammill) Blake in Miller. She grew up and attended country school in rural Ree Heights. She attended Ree Heights High School, graduating in 1957. Gerry and her mother then moved to Huron for a short time after her fathers death. While in Huron she graduated from the Huron Business School.

Gerry then returned to Ree Heights where she met Steve Bud Ames. They were married nearly 50 years ago on June 11, 1961. They farmed by Wessington Springs for a short time and then moved northwest of Miller near Buds family farm. They then moved to the Virgil area to live and farm and have been there for 45 years.

Geraldine is one of a dying breed of farm/ranch wives. She put in many hours of cooking meals for Bud and the farm help and even hauled many fried chicken meals to the field for the guys. Many times Gerry would get on a tractor to help in the hay field. She also helped move cattle many times on either horse or in a pickup. She raised chickens, milked cows and helped raise many calves, lambs, pigs, cats, dogs and even a pet raccoon. Gerry grew many gardens over the years. She was a great cook and baker and many drop in guests were treated to a good meal at Bud and Gerrys table.

Gerry did some fishing with her family when they were younger but her favorite past times were planting flowers and sewing for herself and her family. She made many Easter dresses, prom dresses and dress clothes for her children and herself over the years. Her proudest moments in sewing were the making of her wedding gown, her daughters wedding gown and her granddaughters first communion dresses.

In the last few years she started quilting and sewing doll clothes for her family. She was an avid NASCAR fan and cheered on her favorite drivers. She loved cheering for the Vikings, Twins and Cornhuskers over the years. She also enjoyed watching rodeos.

The times Gerry enjoyed most are the times spent with family, children and grandchildren. Visits were always too short so many phone calls were enjoyed between visits

Gerry lived a quiet existence here on earth and invested nearly all her time and energy in her family. When Gerry was asked what her greatest accomplishments are, she would say her family, which consists of Steve Bud Ames, her husband of nearly 50 years; daughter, Sandra (Alan) Woytassek of Aberdeen, SD; two sons, Randy (Kate) Ames of Grand Island, Nebraska, Rick Ames of Mitchell, South Dakota; All of whom are so grateful and blessed to have shared in Gerrys life. Also grateful and blessed are her eight grandchildren, Abby, Kendra, Rebecca, Alexandra and Andrea Woytassek of Aberdeen, Wyatt, Garrett and Levi Ames of Grand Island; one sister Joyce Blake of Ft. Bragg, California; and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister in law Delton and Mabel Blake and an infant sister Dorothy.
